About Joe

I'mJoe_Kelly__Jess__Noel_Khalil.jpg fascinated by the influence we men have on our children, stepchildren, and everyone else in our families. Since 2002, I've been talking with, writing about, and speaking about dads, stepdads, and other men in families.

Conversations with thousands of men across North America led to the stories and insights in Dads & Daughters and my 5 other fathering books.

Once a stay-at-home dad (who also worked full time), my kids are now adults and I currently help care for my grandson. Fathering remains an adventure!

I am now a national certified life coach, sharing my passion for working and sharing strategies with men in families.  I specialize in coaching:

  • Fathers and stepfathers with daughters

  • Family members and friends who have a loved one strugglign with eating disorders and/or addiction.

A primary media source on fathering, I’ve been featured on the Today Show, CNN, Fox News, MS-NBC, NPR’s Talk of the Nation—and in Time, People, the New York Times, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, Parenting and scores of other media outlets.

A co-founder of New Moon Girls magazine and the national nonprofit Dads & Daughters, I’ve also co-authored and edited several other books, including Pursuing Perfection: Eating Disorders, Body Myths, and Women at Midlife and Beyond with Dr. Margo Maine and Yoga and Eating Disorders: Ancient Healing for Modern Illness with Carolyn Costin. I’m a journalist by training and was an award-winning reporter for Minnesota Public Radio.

I serve on advisory boards for the Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood, Ophelia’s Place, Take Our Daughters & Sons to Work Day, and Voice Male magazine. I’ve also served as a director on the boards of the Eating Disorders Coalition for Policy, Research, and Action in Washington, DC and the Minnesota Fathers and Families Network.

I’ve keynoted at state fathering conferences in New York, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota—as well as at conferences of the National Eating Disorders Association, Canada’s National Eating Disorders Information Centre, and numerous universities. Below is a short clip.

My awards include the Eating Disorders Coalition’s Activist of the Year and Women’s Sports Foundation Title IX Father of the Year.

I'm glad you're here!

In the fellowship of fathers,
Joe
